Dress warmly for the walk in to the park on Sunday. It will all be worthwhile as the woodstove will be blazing, the cider will be warm and the carol singing, led by Dave Durkee, will put you in the Christmas spirit.

Van shuttle will be available for those with mobility issues. It will be at the gate at 1:50 and leave the gate at 2:00. We hope to see you there from 2 to 4.

CAROLS, COOKIES AND CIDER AT THE CABIN

Sunday, Dec.8 from 2 to 4, the Friends of Ellenwood invite you to join us for Carols, cookies and cider in the cabin. The carol singing will be led by Dave Durkee. We will be providing a van shuttle for those with mobility issues. It will leave the gate at 2PM. PINE CONE BIRD FEEDER WORKSHOP

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2013 – FROM 2 – 4  PINE CONE  BIRD FEEDER WORKSHOP- Learn how to make a pine cone bird feeder for those birds that over winter in your backyard. We will also give you ideas on making  other styles of bird feeders  All materials are supplied. Suitable for all ages. Adult supervision required. WE WILL BE PROVIDING A VAN SHUTTLE FOR THOSE WITH MOBILITY ISSUES. THE VAN WILL LEAVE THE GATE AT 2 PM. As this workshop is inside, we will only cancel if there is significant rain in the forecast. We will send out a post on Saturday morning to confirm if the event is on or not.

Camping Primer

Our camping primer is going ahead, the forecast is for clearing Sunday afternoon. Stephen Sollows will show 2 different tent set ups and how to operate 3 types of cook stoves. He will also share some tips about making your camping experience fun and safe.

Stephen will also demonstrate a tasty selection of easy food dishes you can make on your camping trip.

WEEK-END IN THE PARK – OCTOBER 2013

PUMPKIN CARVING – Even though the forecast is for light rain we are going to have the Pumpkin Carving at the Cabin from 2 to 4 on Sunday, October 27th. We will supply the pumpkins and there will be hot chocolate, juice and cookies available. Let’s hope the weather turns out like last Sunday.

SCOUTS IN THE PARK – Our local Scout Troop will be having a camp-out in the park, this Saturday and Sunday, the 26th and 27th. They will have several vehicles in the park, so they can transport their gear in and out of the park. They will be camped around the cabin and will be using the cabin as a First Aid Station. We hope that they have good weather.

2 Fall 2013 events

Just a reminder about the 2 events that are happening at Ellenwood Park this week-end.

On Friday, October 18, from 6 to 8 – join the Friends of Ellenwood for a Full Moon Pot Luck dinner. It looks like the weather will co-operate and it will be a nice evening to stroll into the park, enjoying the fall colours and later watch the full moon rise over the lake. Bring your favourite appy, main course, salad or dessert. There is a hot plate and microwave and of course our warm, wood stove. There is always coffee, tea and hot chocolate available. We hope to see you there.

On Sunday, October 20th, we have Pumpkin Carving, from 2 to 4, fun for the whole family, at the ski cabin. Pumpkins provided. We hope to see you there.

FALL 2013 EVENT UPDATE

YOGA IN THE PARK IS ON THIS SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 29TH FROM 2 TO 4

We have added a Full Moon Pot Luck Dinner on Friday, October 18 to our Fall schedule.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 6 – FROM 2 – 4 – NATURE WALK – Stephen Sollows will lead you on a walk through the Nature trail in the park.  The walk will take approximately 1 to 1 ½ hours over a variety of terrain. Wear suitable clothing and shoes and bring water. Suitable for older children and adults. Coffee, tea, hot chocolate and cookies will be available in the cabin.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 10 FROM 11 TO 2 – Senior’s “Stroll-in” Picnic Thursday, October 10th – 11:00am  Ellenwood Park (meet at Park entrance by 11am)   Enjoy a leisurely walk through beautiful Ellenwood Park and sit down to a picnic/brunch at the cabin.  This outdoor event will have you feeling great and enjoying the fall season!  FREE!!!   Registration is required. Please call Yarmouth Recreation at 742-8868.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18 FROM 6 TO 8 – FALL FULL MOON – POT LUCK DINNER –  Join the Friends of Ellenwood Park, at the cabin, for a Pot Luck Dinner. Bring your favourite main dish, salad or dessert. Enjoy the fall colour as you walk into the cabin and the full moon on the lake, later in the evening. There is a microwave and hot plate for heating food. Coffee, tea, juice and hot chocolate available.

 

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 20 – FROM 2 – 4  PUMPKIN CARVING – This will be our 3rd annual pumpkin carving. Come out and carve your pumpkin for Halloween. Pumpkins will be supplied. This activity is suitable for all ages, adult supervision is required. Coffee, tea, hot chocolate and cookies will be available in the cabin. RAIN DATE WILL BE SUNDAY, OCTOBER 27TH.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 21 – FROM 11 TO 2 – RETIRED TEACHERS ORGANIZATION – LUNCH & WALK. Meet at the gate and walk into the cabin for a lovely day in the park.

FALL 2013 EVENTS

We have finalized our Fall 2013 Events. Just to note there is an event tomorrow night, September 19 – Harvest Moon and on this coming Sunday -September 22 – Yoga in the Park. I was out there today and noticed that the mushrooms are starting to pop up and of course it was a great day for a walk. We hope to see you out at the cabin at one of our events.

FALL EVENTS 2013

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 19 – HARVEST MOON – from 7 to 9pm– Several members will be opening the cabin, for an evening walk and to see the Harvest Moon over Ellenwood. Coffee, tea, hot chocolate, juice and cake will be available

SUNDAY, SETPTEMBER 22 – from 2 to 4 – YOGA AT THE PARK-  Join Deb Sullivan in a yoga class. This will be a beginner’s class with the emphasis on restorative stretching and breathing exercises. The class will be held outside, weather permitting (rain date Sunday, September 29th) so wear suitable clothing and bring a YOGA mat. Meet at the ski cabin. Suitable for young teens to seniors. Coffee, tea, hot chocolate and cookies will be available in the cabin. Remember it takes approx. 15 to 20 minutes to walk to the cabin.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 28 – FROM 9 -4 – YARMOUTH RUNNING EXPO – The Friends of Ellenwood park are participating in the 1st annual Running Expo.

Yarmouth will be hosting its first Running Expo Saturday,September 28, 2013. This fun and informative event will be  happening at the Yarmouth Rodd’s Grand Hotel on Main Street.

The day will have several components to it including:
* tables promoting products from companies and stores
* displays from organizations and races
* information sessions on different running topics
* a fashion show highlighting the newest running products

Yarmouth has an incredible running community and we want to share the energy with everyone. Please come and join us celebrate running and other healthy lifestyle pursuits.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 17 – FROM 2 – 4  PINE CONE SUET BIRD FEEDER WORKSHOP- Learn how to make a pine cone suet bird feeder for those birds that over winter here. All materials are supplied. Suitable for all ages. Adult supervision required.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 8 – CAROL SINGING IN THE CABIN – TO BE CONFIRMED.

ALL EVENTS ARE AT NO COST. DONATIONS ARE WELCOME.

MEMBERSHIPS ARE NOW AVAILABLE FOR THE 2013/14 SEASON – INDIVIDUALS – $10 AND FAMILIES $15.

Walk and Wheel Event 2013

I have attached all the events that are going on for the Walk and Wheel Event. Friends of Ellenwood Park are hosting a Bicycle decorating and parade event, on Sunday, May 26th from 1 to 3, at the ski cabin. There will be decorating materials provided, but feel free to bring some of your own to express your individuality. The parade will leave the ski cabin at 2PM and travel around the paved loop. Cookies and juice will be available, at the ski cabin, after the parade.

Park ‘n Walk! (or wheel)From May 25, and for the whole month of June, you can park your vehicle at theMariner’s Centre or the Prospect Street Parking Lot. It’s a short walk from there to many destinations.

Clean Around the Loop

Friends of Ellenwood Park is one of the community groups that is participating in cleaning up the ditches and roadsides in the Chebogue Road area. The other groups we will be raising money for are  TREPA,SHYFT, Yarmouth Food Bank, Giles Boudreau Foundation, the 2 Historical Churches on Chebogue Rd and the Chebogue Cemetary Society. We hope that you will come out and join one of these groups or get a group of your neighbours together and clean the ditches and roadsides in your area.
